In 2003, station owner Michael Presti and his wife Christine received news that would change the course of their lives forever. Their 3 year old daughter Ellen, was diagnosed with Aspergers, a form of autism. With no knowledge of the disorder, a furious research campaign began by the couple to find out as much information they could about Aspergers so they could make an informed decision about how to take care of Ellen. Through a few friends, they came into contact with an organization called Faces 4 Autism. For those of you who aren't familiar, they are the Bubbles 4 Autism people, but they do so much more than that. They counsel you, educate on how to fill our necessary forms for aid, what is and how to conduct an IEP meeting, rights of the children in schools and the school responsibility to educate them according to IEP mandate. They also have special events for the children like a disabilities prom, days at the zoo, surfer healing trip and more. It was because of Faces 4 Autism that Ellen is now a Sophomore in college and leading a productive life.
Christine and Michael have gone on to become former presidents of Faces 4 Autism and have also done speaking engagements to other organizations such as Boy Scouts and Churches. Michael states "There are so many people who have come up to us after speaking telling us how there are people in families who don't know how to or what to do for their children who are afflicted". This is where Faces 4 Autism comes in. He adds. "Our eyes have been opened to a new normal and we are better people for it." " To know that you can have an affect on people that begin to understand and treat those with autism correctly, through education, is a Blessing to us and a tribute to amazing work Faces does."
